Training overview

This facilitator‑led course will increase knowledge and awareness of key issues relating to supporting people affected by both mental health and substance use in Scotland. The session explores the relationship between the two, common mental health conditions, and how workers can effectively support and signpost individuals.

The session is interactive and informative, offering participants the opportunity to build confidence and share learning with colleagues from across the sector.

Learning outcomes

By the end of the session, you will be able to:

  • recall the prevalence of people with co‑existing substance use and mental health issues
  • describe the relationship between mental health and substance use
  • gain an overview of common mental health conditions
  • identify the impact of stigma in relation to drug use and mental health
  • identify how to support and signpost people affected by mental health and substance use
  • understand the importance of self‑care when working in a support setting

Informed level: The informed level specifies the baseline practice‑specific knowledge and skills every worker in the drugs and alcohol sector should be developing upon entering employment.
