16 Days of Action Against Gender Based Violence

This international campaign runs from 25 November to 10 December each year and encourages action and awareness against all forms of violence against women and girls.

Forms of violence can be:

  • rape and sexual assault
  • domestic abuse
  • child sexual abuse
  • child sexual exploitation
  • sexual harassment
  • stalking
  • female genital mutilation
  • forced marriage
  • child marriage
  • sex trafficking
  • pornography
  • prostitution
  • and other forms of commercial sexual exploitation

16 Days programme in Dumfries and Galloway

Each year, the The Violence Against Women and Girls Subcommittee of the Dumfries and Galloway Public Protection Partnership organise events to raise awareness over a 16 day period.

All the events are free of charge, but booking is required.  For bookings, please follow the links provided.

Reclaim the Night March Dumfries Plainstains and Stranraer Millenium Centre 

Providing an opportunity for women and allies to walk around Dumfries and Stranraer, with the message that women should be free to walk after dark without fear or concern for their safety. Recognising that women from all walks of life experience violence against women (including rape, sexual harassment and catcalling) and this should never be acceptable.

Domestic Abuse Conference 2025

The local domestic abuse conference will focus on the latest research and best practice to respond to domestic abuse including the Safe and Together Model, the Homicide Timeline, Non-fatal Strangulation, the Safe and Together + MARAC Pilot, and more.

Speakers include: Jane Monckton-Smith – Homicide Timeline, Fiona Drouet – Emily Test Foundation, Fiona McMullen – ASSIST, Anna Smith – Safe Lives, Anna Mitchell – Safe & Together Institute.

In addition, there will be three workshops:

Workshops include:

  • Safe and Together Perpetrator’s Pattern Mapping Tool
  • The Caledonian System
  • Post-Separation Abuse - insights for professionals on how to identify and evidence it

Own My Life Taster Day: 

One-day training for professionals

This training introduces professionals them to the Own My Life course content and will enable them to more effectively refer women into the course.

The taster day will provide participants with high quality awareness about domestic abuse, trauma and women’s experiences, provide networking opportunities between services and ensure women receive the best support possible from local services.

Welcoming will be from 9am, starting at 9:30 sharp. Finish time is 3:30pm.

Safe and Together Overview – In-person Event

This session provides professionals with the opportunity to understand how they can work in a way that is domestic abuse informed, providing a shared language that can be used to talk about domestic abuse without blaming the survivor for the abuse they have experienced. The training helps to support professionals to recognise perpetrating domestic abuse as a parenting choice and explore how professionals can hold perpetrators accountable for the harm, they cause their children.
