Self-neglect and hoarding protocol

Guidance for professionals who are concerned about an adult who may be self-neglecting or displaying hoarding behaviours.

The protocol explains how agencies in Dumfries and Galloway should identify concerns, assess risk, work with individuals and coordinate support. It includes assessment tools, referral pathways and guidance on working with adults, families and other agencies to reduce risks and improve wellbeing.

Use this protocol if you need to:

  • recognise signs of self-neglect or hoarding
  • assess the level of risk
  • consider capacity and decision-making
  • make referrals and share information appropriately
  • plan a multi-agency response where support is needed.
